Tibet and Nepal: Finding Ourselves at Great Heights

The second Las Dalias Around the World experience took 21 members of the Las Dalias family to the heart of the Himalayas. Over fifteen days, the journey travelled through China, Tibet and Nepal, discovering landscapes, traditions and, above all, the stories behind some of the people and brands that are part of the market.

The journey began in Chengdu, among skyscrapers, pandas and the traditions of Sichuan opera, before heading into the landscapes of the Tibetan Plateau. In Lhasa, at an altitude of 3,650 metres, the group discovered some of the most emblematic sites of Buddhist culture, including the Potala Palace, Sera Monastery and Jokhang Temple.

The route continued to Pashool, the hometown of Puchi and Chunda, where the expedition had the opportunity to discover the traditional craftsmanship of local women spinners and share a day of encounters, embroidery, dances and traditions with their families. A cultural exchange that highlighted the value of handmade work and the passing down of knowledge from one generation to the next.

Then came the great landscapes of the Himalayas: the sacred lakes of Namtso, Manasarovar and Yamdrok, and finally, Everest. At more than 5,000 metres above sea level, reaching its base camp became one of the most intense moments of the journey, before crossing the border into Nepal.

In Kathmandu, the final stage of the journey, the expedition discovered the country through Juan Torrens and Juan López, who are connected to a family tradition of crafting hemp textiles. Here, the journey once again connected with one of Las Dalias’ essential ideas: discovering the value of things that are still made by hand in an increasingly digital world.

But the true destination of this adventure was its people. Travelling together allowed members of the Las Dalias family to share experiences, strengthen their bonds and see in a different light the people they work alongside every week.
