Las Dalias Market Travels to Guatemala: Inaugurates a New Corner to Honor the Ancient Tradition of Giant Kites

Las Dalias Market expands its intercultural journey with the inauguration of ‘El Rincón de Guatemala’ (The Guatemala Corner), a new stop within its interactive walkway “A World in Las Dalias.” This space, which joins previous tributes to Nepal and Vietnam, is dedicated to honoring the profound worldview and living art of Guatemala’s indigenous peoples.
The centerpiece of this inauguration is the celebration of one of the country’s most vibrant and symbolic traditions: the Festival of Giant Kites in Sumpango and Santiago Sacatepéquez. Every November 1st, the sky in these communities transforms into an altar of color and faith, where enormous kites, meticulously crafted from silk paper and bamboo, rise as messengers between two worlds.
These ephemeral works of art, the result of months of collaborative work by entire communities, are much more than kites. According to Mayan cosmology, they represent a spiritual bridge between the world of the living (Rukú'x Kaj) and the underworld (Rukú'x Ulew). Their flight is a ritual to honor the deceased, ward off evil spirits, and keep the sacred bond with ancestors alive, demonstrating that memory can rise and endure in the wind.
Isabel, the market coordinator and a native of Guatemala, comments: “With this corner, we want the wind of Ibiza to also carry a message of admiration for ancestral cultures. It is an invitation to connect with a philosophy of life where art, community, and spirituality intertwine to celebrate life and death. It is a little piece of our heart that now lives in the market.”
Las Dalias Market invites locals and visitors to explore ‘El Rincón de Guatemala’ and all the countries that make up this unique journey around the world without leaving Ibiza.

Advice

We recommend avoiding peak hours (Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.), as significant traffic congestion occurs. Additionally, we may need to close the market entrance if full capacity is reached.
